Eutin Timeline - overview

1964

First contacts in Eutin were established by Helmut Huelsbergen, University of Kansas German professor (now deceased). He was looking for an appropriate location for establishing summer language instruction for University of Kansas students to learn German. 

1966

The first University of Kansas summer KU German Language Institute led by Eugene Grotegut was conducted in Eutin. Charles Loveland, later president of Friends of Eutin, participated as a KU freshman in this first group. The practice of arranging for families in Eutin to host the students for about six weeks was established.

1967

Helmut Scheewe, teacher at the Voss Gymnasium, Eutin, began teaching for the University of Kansas Summer Language Institute, and continued in this role for many years. 

1989

February 5, 1989

Members of the Lawrence community were invited to a meeting to create a new organization - Friends of Eutin. In spite of a heavy snowstorm, a dozen people attended. Among community members were people who formerly participated, or had children who participated, as students in the KU German language institutes.

May 4, 1989

Friends of Eutin met and elected officers: Chuck Loveland, president; Stuart Boley, treasurer; and Frank Baron, chair of the steering committee. Steering committee members were Glenn Kappelman, program and funding; Helmut Huelsbergen, school exchanges; William Keel, preservation and planning; Mary Allen, rose project; Stephanie Murray, arts exchanges; Ernie Eck, celebration of cultures; and Werner Mohr, German club.

June-July 1989

The KU German Summer Language Institute was conducted by Professor Bill Keel.

June 1989

In Eutin, Bill Keel and Helmut Scheewe persuaded the city’s executive council to persist in efforts to establish the sister-city relationship.

October, 1989

Lawrence welcomes Eutin delegation

Eutin Mayor Gernot Grimm and a delegation consisting of Karl-Heinrich and Heide Jäschke, Helga Jansen, Waltraud Lepsien, Joachim and Ingrid Neumeister, and Helmut Scheewe visited Lawrence for the purpose of finalizing the sister city agreement.

October 27, 1989

Mayors sign declaration of friendship

Lawrence Mayor Robert Schumm and Eutin Mayor Gernot Grimm signed the Declaration of Friendship at Lawrence City Hall.
