To further cultural understanding

Take note of local opportunities to learn more about the culture of two of our three sister cities. Three spring and summer opportunities are close at hand pertaining to Japan and Germany. One is provided by Spencer Art Museum on Thursday, May 11 and the other two are classes offered by Osher Lifelong Learning Institute during the summer.

Spencer Art Museum’s monthly “Senior Session” on Thursday May 11 at 10:15 a.m. will provide an introduction to traditional tea practices of Japan. Senior sessions are scheduled monthly for retirees, but all are welcome to attend. The session this month takes place in the museum’s central court. Admission is free.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers a course “Beyond the Beauty of Japanese Gardens” taught by Dianne Daughterty in 3 sessions, 10 a.m. to noon on July 18, 25 and August 1. “In this course we’ll look beyond the exquisite beauty of Japanese gardens and learn to identify and more deeply appreciate the common elements that comprise a Japanese garden while exploring their various styles.” The course is offered in person at the KU Edwards Campus, Overland Park, and online. There is a course fee of $50. Enroll at KU Osher Home.

Another Osher Institute summer course concerns German-American relations. “From Friends to Foes to Partners: Revisiting 250 Years of German American Relations” will be taught by Anette Isaacs on Wednesday evenings, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., on June 7, 14, and 21. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Berlin airlift and 60th anniversary of President Kennedy’s iconic visit to Berlin. These pivotal events present a perfect opportunity to take a closer look at a long relationship. The fee is $50. Enroll at KU Osher Home.
