Student exchanges paused
The Sister Cities Lawrence (SCL) Board has decided to "pause" any future student exchanges with our three sister cities for the next year. The one exception is the planned visit of a group of youth from Iniades, Greece, at the end of April 2021. This would be the third attempt for the delegation to come to Lawrence, but each previous try has been stymied by the pandemic. It would be the first youth delegation from Iniades to visit Lawrence.
"We have some hope that we will be able to see our Greek friends next year, but it is a volatile situation," Bill Keel, SCL chair, said. "The health of all involved is paramount in our considerations and we hope regular exchanges can resume soon. But for now, we will err on the side of caution."
Each year, student delegations from Eutin, Germany and Hiratsuka, Japan have traveled to Lawrence and students from Lawrence have gone to Germany and Japan. 2020 and 2021 are the first cancellations of these exchanges in thirty years.
