Lawrence/Hiratsuka celebrate 30 year anniversary

September 21st marked the 30th anniversary of the Sister City agreement between Lawrence and Hiratsuka, Japan.  Thirty years ago, Lawrence Mayor Shirley Martin-Smith and Hiratsuka Mayor Kyoichi Ishikawa signed the enduring agreement which has resulted in numerous exchanges of students and adults between the 2 cities.  More than 1,000 youth have traveled between the 2 cities in annual cultural exchanges that have recently been disrupted by the pandemic.

Additionally, adult delegations have traditionally visited the sister city in celebration of the 5 year anniversary of the agreement. The 30 year celebrations have been postponed due to pandemic. However, regular contact between the friends formed during that 30 year period has furthered and deepened the relationship between the two cities.

Lawrence Vice Mayor Brad Finkeldei recently signed a proclamation recognizing the occasion.
