Japanese Friendship Garden attracts tours
The Japanese Friendship Garden, located just north of the Watkins Museum of History at 11th and Massachusetts, has recently attracted the attention of groups. Carol Shankel conducted a tour of the garden for members of the Leadership Lawrence class in April. Leadership Lawrence, sponsored by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, provides participants first-hand exposure to the inner workings of Lawrence and Douglas County,
Carol Shankel and Bob Moody led another tour of the garden on June 2. Approximately 30 members of the Retirement Boot Camp learned of the history and intent of the garden. The Retirement Boot Camp, a pilot program of the Lawrence Public Library, is designed to help people transitioning to retirement find health, happiness, purpose and peace of mind.
The Japanese Friendship Garden was dedicated in 2000 and was constructed in part with gifts from the City of Hiratsuka. It is maintained by Lawrence Parks and Recreation.1047 Massachusetts St
